The exuberant and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with grace painter in natural light of the cold winter to the redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional scenario of ‘Vermiglio’, the film visionary of Maura Delpero, who won the silver lion in 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of an extensive family, set in Vermiglio’s small mountain village during the World War II’s auctiony days, follows a series of dramatic and consequent events after the arrival of a Taciturn Soldier (Giuseppe de Domenico), which hides in city after leaving the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family’s eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). ‘Vermiglio’ shows the life of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a faded era. Conjuring stories of the past of his own family, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that resembles the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through the perspective of Lucia, ‘Vermiglio’ seems distinct and new.
